Bye Bye Summer, Hello Posh & Plated
Here's to doing the thing...
So, last week, I did a thing. I hosted my first supper club. To the avid readers, I am sorry for not posting; however, I was doing something. Something that has lived in my mind’s eye for more seasons than I could count. As a self-proclaimed extrovert, I could exist with people around 24/7. It is quite literally my dream to have the “hangout house” for my loved ones. Existing with a tight-knit community has afforded me the opportunity to have my friends over for any reason. Galentine’s Day? On it. Spring Equinox? Done. Year-End Goal Setting? Yes ma’am. You get the point. Even when there was no reason to host, I took great pride in inviting my friends over, feeding them, and engaging in stimulating conversation.
This year, I realized I did not have to find a particular reason. Instead of waiting for the calendar to dictate the appropriate time to invite people over, I could curate the entire experience. The menu, the playlist, the color scheme, the dress code. Most importantly, the takeaway.
Last Sunday, Posh & Plated hosted its inaugural supper club. The theme was ‘Bye Bye Summer’ and it was a celebration to mark the close of a tremendous season. Guests were encouraged to wear linen or an outfit that made them feel great during summer—something they wanted to wear one last time before the season changed. They were completely unaware of what was on the menu but obliged anyway.
After sending the Partiful invite, I realized I had just demanded that people show up to my home at 8pm with vague instructions and I should probably make it worth their while. I got to work thinking about the vibe I wanted to create from start to finish. What did I want them to gain from this experience? I spent the next few weeks thinking through the menu—I knew I wanted seasonal flavors to be at the helm but wanted to make sure that it felt cohesive. I landed on peach as the anchoring flavor and thought long about what felt like summer. Soon enough, watermelon, tomato, and lemon came to mind.
The goal was to celebrate the close of a season we all regard with high esteem; however, my mind whispered, “go deeper.” I started thinking about every facet of what made a night out feel extraordinary and was hellbent on recreating that at home. What did I want them to smell when they entered the front door? What did I want the night to sound like? What tablecloth would withstand spilled drinks and sauce? What did I want them to leave the night thinking?
From there, I created a folder of colors that represented summer—butter yellow, creams, peach, sage green, khaki. I thought about a tablescape. Thinking about the tablescape led me back to the menu! Each time I spiraled into more specific detail, which ultimately served my purpose. I was able to find the perfect tablecloth, create a 5-hour playlist, find two scents that made perfect sense for the evening, and craft a menu that blended simple, yet robust flavors with Mediterranean fare.
Below, you will find evidence of my brainchild, and I am beyond proud of what I was able to create. It marked the beginning of something that I had thought of for so long and that I decided would come to fruition on a random Tuesday afternoon. You know that I love to leave you all with a call to action.
Do the thing! Whatever you have been putting off until conditions feel perfect—just do it. I made so many mistakes during this first salon; however, I have notes of things I would do differently stashed in my handy dandy notebook (generational callback). It does not have to be perfect—it just has to be yours. I know that you are capable of providing the world with something beautiful. For now, enjoy a few photos and feel free to follow Posh & Plated (@poshandplated) on Instagram to see more!
